In December,1991, Alexander Aris began a speech in Oslo with the following words: “I stand before you here today to accept on behalf of my mother, Aung San Suu Kyi, this greatest of prizes, the Nobel Prize for Peace. Because circumstances do not permit my mother to be here in person, I will do my best to convey the sentiments I believe she would express.”
The circumstances that prevented young Alexander's mother from attending the ceremony were that she was under house arrest, under the orders of the military government of Myanmar/Burma. She has been under house arrest or in prison almost continuously since then. This is in spite of the fact, or perhaps because of the fact, that she won about eighty percent of the vote in a free election held in 1990.
The sentiments that Alexander believed his mother would have expressed were those of peace, human responsibility, courage and the search for human perfection. Alexander, and his younger brother Kim, have every reason to be enormously proud of their mum.
The rest of us will have our lives enriched by learning about her, by learning to admire what she stands for and perhaps by supporting her in whatever small way we can. |

Hi,
The story is hard to understand, but I understand it.The pictures are very funny.
Thank You For Reading
This book was very intresting in encouraged me to go out and make a difference in my school.I hadn't even heared of aung sau su kyi untill my teacher Mr Bucco gave me the book.I will never forget this book or what she did for her country. What made you write this book?
Aung San Suu Kyi was a very informative book and I enjoyed reading it. The book was easy to understand and I learnt a lot about the history of Burma and how the people of Burma wanted a democracy and not a junta. I recommend this book to children who feel strongly about people's rights.

I thought this book was great! It is really interesting and very inspiring. This book encourages me to help people who need it and make a difference in the world. I hadn't even heard of Aung San Suu Kyi until my teacher chose me to do this review. I know I will never forget her for what she did for her country. The reason for this is that I could make sense of what was written, it wasn't all just text that I couldn't understand. I like how Allan has explained what unusual words mean and how to pronounce them. the pictures were nice and simple. I love everything about this book. I highly recommend it to people who like to read biographies or are doing a report on the inspirational Aung San Suu Kyi.
I am really glad you got something from this Danni. Keep your eyes open for news of this great lady in the news and on the web, because her story isn't over yet. - Allan |
